In Kolkata, an innovative Durga Puja installation has taken shape near Kalighat, featuring a 5.5-foot-tall representation of Goddess Durga constructed entirely from recycled ballpoint pens. This unique artwork utilizes around 13,000 pens and refills, serving as a prominent attraction alongside the main puja idol. The installation's primary purpose is to significantly boost public awareness regarding plastic recycling and its vital role in preventing environmental pollution.
The artist, Chandra Nath Saha, focused on transforming familiar objects into a larger artistic statement, aiming to first engage viewers as art before revealing its recycled composition. The pens were supplied by Linc, a city-based manufacturer, emphasizing a circular approach where the pens will be recycled into new products after the festival.
Organizers confirmed that this pen installation is supplementary to the traditional idol, which will undergo the customary immersion ritual. The initiative underscores a commitment to blending cultural festivities with environmental consciousness, demonstrating creative solutions for waste management.
