Kolkata's Durga Puja: A Cultural Tapestry Unfolds

As Durga Puja approaches, Kolkata is buzzing with preparations, officially kicking off with khuti puja ceremonies following Rath Yatra. Community Pujas are set to commence their festive countdown, with idol makers receiving their initial ceremonial orders. This year's celebrations are heavily inspired by Bengal's deep-rooted heritage, evoking nostalgia and celebrating enduring traditions.

Several organizers are highlighting Bengal's artistic and cultural legacy. Themes like 'The Art of Bengal' by Hazra Park Durgotsab will pay tribute to traditional crafts and performing arts. Adi Ballygunge Sarbojonin Durga Puja Porisod, marking its centenary, explores 'Bhit' (foundation), drawing parallels between idol structures and societal values.

Mythology and spiritual narratives also feature prominently. Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity presents 'Akal Bodhon,' celebrating faith and the triumph of good. Ekdalia Evergreen Club will recreate the grandeur of Gujarat's Somnath Temple while preserving its iconic sabeki idol.

Nostalgia takes center stage at Samaj Sebi Sangha, which is dedicating its Puja to the birth centenary of Uttam Kumar, recreating the glamour of Kolkata's 1970s and '80s Pujas. Behala Young Man Association's theme, 'Chuti' (Liberation of Imagination), draws inspiration from childhood memories and childhood art.

Nalin Sarkar Street Sarbojonin Durgotsab's theme, 'Jololipi,' conceptualized by artist Sanatan Dinda, draws from childhood memories beside the Ganga, symbolizing life's currents and humanity's stories through the language of water. Alipore Sarbojanin Durgotsav will retell the Ramayana from Sita's perspective.
