Koe Wetzel & Ella Langley's "Jaded": Disco Meets Angst

Koe Wetzel's collaboration with Ella Langley, titled "Jaded," unexpectedly ventured into an 80s disco-pop soundscape, a direction Wetzel himself described as his most pop-centric recording. The song's origins trace back to a writing session where a forgotten chorus, initially conceived months prior by ERNEST, Langley, and Jordan Schmidt, was revived. This chorus, featuring the line "How'd you get so jaded?", juxtaposed an uplifting melody with poignant lyrical questions about heartbreak and relationship struggles.

Schmidt noted the initial demo leaned towards a '70s Fleetwood Mac vibe but evolved into a dancier track. Producer Gabe Simon worked to balance the song's danceable energy with the lyrical angst, drawing inspiration from artists like Depeche Mode and even the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." The production process was meticulous, involving multiple drummers, layered guitar parts, and extensive use of Langley's ad-libbed vocalizations.

Reaching the final version of "Jaded" was an arduous journey, with the production team, including Simon and Columbia's Ben Maddahi, going through 17 different mixes. Despite Wetzel and Langley approving an earlier version, the team refined it further. Released on August 6, "Jaded" debuted at No. 8 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, demonstrating its appeal across different musical tastes.
