The 2019 mystery film 'Knives Out' has earned significant acclaim as a quintessential autumn viewing experience. Multiple publications, such as Oprah Daily, Parade, and Elle, have ranked it among the best fall movies, often placing it at the number one spot.
Directed by Rian Johnson, 'Knives Out' revitalized the classic whodunit genre with a modern twist. The film centers on detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, investigating the suspicious death of a wealthy novelist amidst his dysfunctional family.
Johnson's inspiration stemmed from his lifelong love for murder mysteries, particularly the works of Agatha Christie. He aimed to set the story in contemporary America, moving away from period adaptations.
The production moved swiftly to accommodate Daniel Craig's schedule before his next James Bond film. This quick turnaround facilitated the assembly of a star-studded ensemble cast.
Beyond its mystery elements, the screenplay offers sharp social commentary, contrasting the privileged Thrombey family with the nurse, Marta Cabrera. The film achieved significant box office success, grossing approximately $312 million worldwide, and has spawned a franchise with sequels on Netflix. 'Knives Out' has become an autumn viewing tradition for many.
