Summary
- Knight Rider's iconic car KITT was almost a Datsun 280zx.
- Executives initially deemed the Knight Rider concept too silly.
- The show secured the first four 1982 black Pontiac Grand Ams.

The car that defined '80s television, KITT from 'Knight Rider,' was almost a vastly different vehicle. Creator Glen Larson initially proposed the Datsun 280zx as the crime-fighting super car for Michael Knight.
The Datsun 280zx was a popular sports car in America at the time. However, producer Harker Wade explored newer, sportier options, leading to interest in GM's Pontiac Grand Am.
Pontiac executives were hesitant, viewing the 'Knight Rider' concept as potentially too silly. They even compared it unfavorably to a past television flop. Despite these concerns, Wade and GM reached an agreement.
Ultimately, the production secured the first four 1982 black Pontiac Grand Ams produced. This ensured KITT had its signature look for the show's filming.
