The Grade II listed Carnegie Building in King's Lynn, formerly a library, is undergoing a significant transformation into a performing arts venue named The Workshop King's Lynn. The Garage Trust, which took over the building in April 2026 following a High Court decision, has been awarded £249,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This crucial funding will be dedicated to essential repairs, including the building's roof and the restoration of its floors.
The venue, operated by the Norwich-based arts charity, has already hosted several successful performances, attracting audiences of 120 people. During the renovation process, original features like parquet flooring and stone shelving have been uncovered. The Garage Trust acquired the building, originally opened in 1905, from Norfolk County Council in January 2025.
Artistic director Xenoula Eleftheriades highlighted the importance of such a venue for King's Lynn, noting the community's potentially limited access to arts and performance spaces. The trust plans a careful, phased approach to developing the venue and its services, prioritizing local community needs and the building's restoration.
