26 Oct
Summary
- Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering has reopened after six years.
- Renovation work cost £4.8m, addressing rain damage and the pandemic closure.
- The gallery now features new exhibition space and community art projects.
After a six-year hiatus, the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering, Northamptonshire, has officially welcomed visitors once more. The gallery's reopening follows extensive renovation and repair work, which was initially delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Significant structural issues, including roof repairs necessitated by rain damage in 2023, contributed to the prolonged closure.
The £4.8m renovation project has transformed the Grade II listed building, creating enhanced facilities for exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, and talks. The gallery, named after the renowned Kettering-born painter Sir Alfred East, now presents its first exhibition, 'Faces and Places,' featuring works by local artists.
Additionally, the gallery is displaying photographs from a community project at Kettering's Christmas market, where decorated tiles were installed on the library roof. Gallery manager Billie Stevenson expressed the team's excitement to welcome the public back and to develop future programming.
