Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman, both acclaimed Oscar winners, are set to star together in a new Western thriller, "Rode to Ruin." This marks their first on-screen reunion in nearly four decades, since their 1988 collaboration in "Clean and Sober."
Keaton, 74, will also take on directing duties for the film. He and Freeman, 89, are cast as retired Marshal Henry Tillman and the wanted outlaw Joseph Mulberry. The plot centers on Tillman's decades-long pursuit of his late wife's killer, which leads him to the aging, memory-impaired outlaw Mulberry.
The story promises a deep exploration of forgiveness, revenge, and redemption, with the press release hinting at a "buried truth neither man may survive." R. Dean McCreary wrote the script, and the film's producers include Keaton, Freeman, Lori McCreary, Kelly Mendelsohn, and Gary Lucchesi.
Keaton expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that the story offered significant depth for him and Freeman to explore together. He compared the film's layered narrative to "The Shawshank Redemption," emphasizing that "Rode to Ruin" is more than just a Western.
In their previous film, "Clean and Sober," Keaton played a substance abuse patient, and Freeman portrayed his counselor. "Rode to Ruin" is currently in production with no announced release date.
