Keanu Reeves has been cast in the lead role for Netflix's action thriller "Maelstrom," taking over from Alan Ritchson. The film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, follows a Federal Marshal guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer who is set to testify.
This critical protection detail unfolds over a single evening as a severe hurricane makes landfall. The storm isolates the pair, cutting off external communication and preventing any possibility of timely reinforcements.
Together, the marshal and the witness must fend off assailants dispatched by the arms dealer while simultaneously confronting the destructive force of the hurricane. The project's script is a polished draft by Mark Bianculli, based on an earlier version by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick.
Originally conceived as a spec script sold to Warner Bros. in 1993, "Maelstrom" has been described as "Diehard" in a hurricane. The film was revived by Netflix, marking the first project under producer Jeff Robinov's new deal with the streamer.
