In her latest hit Netflix series 'Genie, Make a Wish', acclaimed Korean writer Kim Eun-sook aims to tell a story about the inherent goodness of human nature. The fantasy romance drama, which premiered just last week, follows Jini (Kim Woo-bin), a genie awakened after a millennium, who becomes entangled with the emotionally detached Ga-yeong (Bae Suzy).
Through the character of Ga-yeong, who has sociopathic tendencies, Kim delves into the central question of whether a person's nature is inherently good or evil. "Ga-yeong believes her nature is evil," the writer explained in a recent interview, "but she strives to make 'good choices' because she learned love from her community." This poses the intriguing question of what truly defines one's morality.
The writer also expressed deep affection for the supporting cast, praising Noh Sang-hyun for his portrayal of an angel of death with a mix of arrogance and holiness, and Ahn Eun-jin for her "lovely and perfect" performance. The series has also featured high-profile cameos, including acclaimed actress Song Hye-kyo, whose participation, according to Kim, "magically added an edge to important scenes."
