Pop icon Katy Perry has gained full legal possession of a $15 million Montecito mansion, concluding a five-year legal dispute. In July 2020, Perry and Orlando Bloom agreed to purchase the sprawling 9,285-square-foot estate. The seller, veteran Carl Westcott, later attempted to back out of the deal, claiming he lacked the mental capacity to consent due to health issues and recent surgery.
However, in late 2023, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of Perry's team. The judge found no persuasive evidence of incapacity, noting Westcott's coherent and rational engagement in negotiations, including considering competing offers. This ruling allowed Perry to officially acquire the property in early 2024.
In addition to securing the mansion, Perry filed her own suit seeking damages. The court awarded her $2.7 million for lost rental income during the dispute and $1.8 million in net damages. Furthermore, Westcott was ordered to pay $3.45 million in attorney fees and court costs.
