Karan Johar Feared Angry Audiences Over 'KANK'

Karan Johar's 2006 film 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' (KANK) initially faced a divided reception, primarily due to its exploration of infidelity. As the film marks its 20th anniversary, Johar recalled attending a paid preview screening the night before its release, where he witnessed audience members reacting with shock and disapproval.

One particular scene, depicting the characters Dev and Maya succumbing to their desires, caused significant dismay among some viewers. Johar recounted an incident where a woman, upon learning he directed the film, expressed anger that it didn't align with her expectation of a family-friendly movie, especially following her recent divorce.

The film's release was marked by polarizing reviews, with praise for its boldness contrasted by criticism for deviating from traditional values. Johar mentioned hearing varied feedback, from being called brave to being labeled anti-'sanskaari'.

However, Johar also shared a positive encounter at an airport lounge weeks later, where a woman confessed to lying to her husband about disliking the film to avoid discussing its themes. This suggested that while some audiences were hesitant, the film resonated on a deeper level.
