28 Oct
Summary
- 'Kantara: Chapter 1' to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 31, 2025
- Shorter OTT window due to pre-existing agreement signed 3 years ago
- Film still performing well in theaters, expected to continue strong run

In a surprising move, the Kannada film 'Kantara: Chapter 1' is gearing up to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 31, 2025, just four weeks after its theatrical release. This decision has sparked discussions across the industry, with many questioning whether such a short OTT window could impact the film's ongoing box office success.
Responding to the development, Chaluve Gowda, partner at Hombale Films, clarified that the early digital release was the result of a pre-existing agreement signed three years ago. He explained that only the South language versions of the film will release on OTT right now, while the Hindi version will come after an eight-week theatrical run.
Gowda further noted that shorter OTT windows have become common practice in South Indian cinema, with most films now following a four-week window before their digital debut. He emphasized that 'Kantara: Chapter 1' will continue its successful theatrical run, with the digital release expected to have a minimal impact of around 10-15% on box office collections.

Despite the early OTT premiere, the film has maintained strong numbers at the box office, even with the release of new titles like 'Thamma' and 'Ek Deewane Ki Dewaniyat' this Diwali season. Trade experts have expressed surprise at the decision, but acknowledged that the eight-week window for the Hindi version is essential to ensure the film's continued success.
