A significant 1907 artwork by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, titled "The Colorful Life," has been sold at auction for more than $42 million.
This painting, previously looted by the Nazis, was returned to the heirs of its original owners in 2023. Prior to its restitution, the artwork resided in a German museum for many decades. Its return to the family, who last possessed it in 1940, enabled a private sale.
The sale occurred on a Wednesday in London, lasting approximately six minutes. Auction house Christie's had anticipated the painting would sell for between $24 million and $33 million. The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed.
Art experts consider "The Colorful Life" to be a crucial work in Kandinsky's artistic development, marking his significant shift from figurative to abstract styles. The painting itself is described as a panoramic, vibrant scene filled with dreamlike characters in a fantastical setting.
