French actor Juliette Binoche offered a playful response to Timothée Chalamet's recent comments suggesting cinema might become like opera or ballet, where fewer people care. Speaking at the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival, Binoche quipped that she thought cinema was already a dying art.
Binoche, who was presenting her directorial debut 'In-I In Motion,' a documentary about her 2008 stage collaboration with dancer Akram Khan, shifted focus to personal artistic fulfillment. She advised that what truly matters is the art that nourishes the soul, rather than making a big deal out of external opinions.
The documentary, assembled from rehearsal footage and live recordings, premiered at San Sebastian and later screened at CPH:DOX. Binoche described the nearly two-decade journey to bring her directorial vision to life, crediting the encouragement of the late Robert Redford.
She also praised documentary filmmakers as "warriors" for their dedication to capturing reality, often at personal risk and with little financial reward. The Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival ran from March 5-15.
