Dame Judi Dench recently revealed a peculiar detail about her Best Supporting Actress Oscar, awarded in 1999 for "Shakespeare in Love." During a conversation with Sir Ian McKellen, she showed him her statuette, noting the absence of a nameplate, which she attributed to a potential theft of the plates before her award ceremony.
McKellen, who has been nominated for two Oscars without winning, then humorously requested to borrow Dench's nameless award. He also shared his own award mishap from nearly 30 years ago concerning his 1997 Golden Globe win for "Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny."
He explained that his Golden Globe fell apart when he unscrewed it, and he was unable to reassemble it, leading him to tell the awarding body he "couldn't find it." Dench playfully scolded him for the story.
Historically, both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes had different processes for engraving winners' names. Until 2010, Oscar statuettes required winners to take them to the Academy for nameplate attachment. The Golden Globes similarly used external manufacturers for personalization before 2018, whereas now winners can have their trophies engraved post-ceremony.
