During a recent television appearance, she humorously noted that she can only see outlines and recognize close friends due to her condition. This diagnosis, which she first revealed in 2012, means Dench relies on others to read her scripts to her, describing the process as like being told a story. She has had to develop new methods for learning her lines, primarily through extensive repetition by loved ones.

Macular degeneration, an age-related condition affecting central vision, makes it impossible for those affected to see objects directly in front of them.
