Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter JP Saxe has embraced independence after a candidly revealed tour cancellation due to low ticket sales. This experience, shared through TikTok and a Variety column, halted his previous trajectory and prompted a reevaluation of success. Saxe now stands proud of his forthcoming independent album, "Okay Piano Guy," set for release on October 23.
He reflects that chasing external benchmarks and others' definitions of success proved detrimental. The canceled tour, rather than being a failure, became the necessary break to question his own aspirations. This led to new collaborations and the decision to form a production company with his band.
Saxe highlights the shift from a corporate-driven definition of success within a record label to prioritizing personal meaning as an artist. He notes how industry platforms like Spotify can monetize insecurities by emphasizing stream counts over artistic merit. Ultimately, Saxe recognizes his community's support for honesty over a façade of success, allowing him to pursue ambitions that feel authentic.
