Joy Harmon, the memorable actress who rose to fame for her role in the 1967 film 'Cool Hand Luke,' has died at the age of 87. She passed away on Tuesday, April 14, at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, after a prolonged illness.
Harmon had been hospitalized for a period, followed by rehabilitation and hospice care at home. She succumbed to complications from pneumonia, having battled the illness for several weeks.
Born in Queens and later moving to Connecticut, Harmon developed a passion for theater, leading to her Broadway debut. Her television appearances, including on Groucho Marx's shows, helped launch her career. She secured her most iconic role as Lucille in 'Cool Hand Luke' at age 27.
In 'Cool Hand Luke,' Harmon's character famously teased convicts with a car-washing scene, a moment she later admitted she didn't fully grasp the impact or double meanings of at the time.
Following her breakthrough, Harmon appeared in various projects like 'Village of the Giants' and 'Bewitched.' She married TV producer Jeff Gourson in 1968, with whom she had three children: Jason, Julie, and Jamie. After her final role in 1973, she retired from acting to focus on her family.
After her divorce in 2001, Harmon opened Aunt Joy's Bakery in Burbank, a business that grew from supplying cakes to her niece's coffee shop and later to studios in the Los Angeles area, including Disney Studios where her son worked.
