- The centre aims to provide access to performing arts.
- It requires further funding to remain operational.
BAFTA-nominated actor Josh O'Connor recently inaugurated the new Everyman Theatre education centre in Cheltenham, his hometown. This £1 million facility, located in a former community venue, is designed to ensure broad access to the performing arts for all ages.
O'Connor, a former participant in Everyman's youth theatre, emphasized the "vitally important" role such spaces play for aspiring actors and the community. He recalled the closure of the previous Axiom arts centre in 2000, which left a "big hole" and highlighted a community need for spaces dedicated to learning and creativity.
Charis, a 17-year-old who benefited from the youth theatre, shared how it positively impacted her life, especially after being diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. She described the new centre as a welcoming environment where she can pursue her passion for performing arts.
The Everyman Theatre acquired and refurbished the Grove Street building for £1 million, establishing a permanent base for its Education and Community Department. However, the theatre faces the ongoing challenge of raising £170,000 annually to sustain its operations and deliver its planned programs, which include choirs, dance classes, and sessions for individuals with dementia.
