Ndeya label will release Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three), the first album of new music from avant-garde composer Jon Hassell since his passing in 2021. This release, due October 2, concludes Hassell's final trilogy, following "Seeing Through Sound" (2020) and "Listening to Pictures" (2018).
The four-song record captures Hassell's final live performance in London at St John at Hackney Church on May 23, 2015. He performed as part of a trio with Rick Cox and John von Seggern. The album was later edited and mixed by Jeff Rona, enhancing the audio beyond a typical live recording.
"Pentimento" signifies earlier images appearing in a painting, a methodology Hassell applied musically throughout his career. Themes and motifs from his previous two albums are woven into "Music Is Invisible," making it a fitting conclusion to his late-career "Pentimento" series and his acclaimed "Fourth World" aesthetic.
Hassell, who died on June 26, 2021, at age 84, was celebrated for his innovative "unified primitive/futuristic sound" combining global ethnic styles with electronic techniques.
