7 Sep
Summary
- Virtual reality headsets allow users to play percussion in an orchestra.
- The program aims to inspire interest in music and real instruments.
- Research shows a decline in music participation in UK schools since 2010.
The Philharmonia Orchestra is leveraging virtual reality to offer immersive musical experiences. Through VR headsets, participants can join the orchestra and perform percussion, such as the timpani, during energetic finales like Rossini's William Tell Overture. This innovative program requires no prior musical or VR knowledge, making it accessible to new audiences.
This initiative addresses declining music participation in UK schools, with GCSE Music entries falling 27% since 2010. The Philharmonia's Virtual Orchestra aims to inspire interest in learning real instruments, bridging the gap between digital engagement and tangible musical education.
Piloted in schools across Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire, the VR headsets received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Of the 428 year 7 students involved, 75% had never attended a classical concert, but 96% expressed likelihood to attend afterward, with 60% feeling inspired to learn an instrument.
