Musician Johnny Marr is set to auction nearly 100 of his guitars, a collection that includes instruments with significant ties to The Smiths and Oasis. Marr stated his decision stems from not wanting his studio to become a museum. These iconic guitars are currently on display in London and will be available at Christie's on September 17. Noel Gallagher recalled borrowing a 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo from Marr for the cover of Oasis' 1994 single 'Supersonic', expressing concern about its welfare.
The Rickenbacker, used on The Smiths' hits like 'What Difference Does It Make', is expected to fetch up to £80,000. The auction also features a 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, gifted to Marr by Seymour Stein. Among other notable instruments are a Green burst Telecaster and a Martin D-28, on which Marr wrote several Smiths classics. A Fender Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar, used in recording the Billie Eilish Bond theme 'No Time To Die', is also part of the sale.
Marr will donate the full proceeds from 31 specific items to The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and The National Autistic Society. The auction will also include amplifiers, gold and silver records, posters, memorabilia, and harmonicas, with individual guitar estimates ranging from £1,000 to £150,000.
