Before his Adult R&B Airplay successes, Gill, originally from Washington, D.C., joined New Edition in 1987. He also experienced significant solo success in the early 1990s with multiple top hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, including four No. 1s.
"One Night" also made its debut on the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs list at No. 25, marking Gill's first appearance on that chart since its launch in 2012. The song also saw an improvement on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
