John Sayles, a two-time Oscar nominee, is set to direct "I Passed This Way," his first feature film in more than ten years, starring Academy Award winners Amy Madigan and Chris Cooper.
The Western, penned by Sayles himself, is scheduled for principal photography in the fourth quarter of 2026. It is based on Eugene Manlove Rhodes' novella "Pasó Por Aquí" and is set in the arid New Mexico Territory in 1898.
The narrative follows a cowboy named Ross McEwen who, after impulsively robbing a bank, seeks refuge at a remote homestead. He faces a profound choice between escaping to Mexico or staying to help a family afflicted with diphtheria, deciding his own character.
Filming will occur in the Canary Islands and Almería, Spain. The cast also includes Thomas Mann, Ted Levine, Ron Perlman, and Cameron Monaghan. The film's makers emphasize its exploration of timeless questions of justice and responsibility in an era of eroding trust.
