John Mulaney to Lead Get Smart Reboot

John Mulaney is slated to star in a new iteration of the beloved spoof spy franchise, Get Smart. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Warner Bros., with Mulaney expressing his excitement about the opportunity. He finds the character of a super-confident, albeit not always informed, spy to be a perfect fit for his comedic persona.

Mulaney's affinity for playing characters who project certainty without full knowledge aligns well with the espionage genre. The screenplay for this reboot is being penned by Seth Grahame-Smith. The original Get Smart series, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, starred Don Adams as the iconic Maxwell Smart. A 2008 film adaptation starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, and Dwayne Johnson grossed $230 million globally. Mulaney's current work also includes a role in the John Madden biopic, where he portrays Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins. The film, directed by David O. Russell, features Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis, and is scheduled for release on November 18, 2026.
