Coltrane's Lost Tapes Emerge for 100th Birthday Bash

The estate of jazz legend John Coltrane is orchestrating "Coltrane 100," a year-long global celebration marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. This extensive tribute encompasses new recordings, live performances, and significant historical releases.

The centerpiece of the celebration is the highly anticipated debut of the "Tiberi Tapes." These are private live recordings made by musician Frank Tiberi between 1961 and 1965. The complete collection is slated for release in September 2026 via Impulse! Records, with a special preview available on Record Store Day, April 18.

On September 23, the 100th anniversary of Coltrane's birth, the Hollywood Bowl will host the Los Angeles premiere of "Coltrane 100: Legacy." This symphonic event features new arrangements of his iconic works, reinterpreted by contemporary arrangers and performed by a 16-piece orchestra with soloist Lakecia Benjamin.

Impulse! Records and partner labels are releasing a comprehensive slate of Coltrane's catalog throughout 2026. This includes significant albums such as "Africa/Brass," "Impressions," and "Ascension." The label also released the first official music video for "A Love Supreme: 'Acknowledgement.'"

Craft Recordings is revisiting Coltrane's early career with "The Best of John Coltrane," focusing on his 1957-1958 sessions. Meanwhile, Rhino Records has issued a limited-edition boxed set, "1960-1964 Mono (Rhino High Fidelity)," featuring key albums pressed from original analog mono master tapes.

Further enriching the centennial, both The John & Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, New York, and The John Coltrane House in Philadelphia will open to the public for the first time this year. These historic sites will host related Centennial initiatives focusing on performance, education, and community engagement.
