Carrying the theme "Transfiguration," JAFF20 will highlight the festival's two-decade journey and the remarkable transformation of Indonesian and Asian cinema during this period.
The festival will open with Garin Nugroho's musical "Opera Jawa," which was originally premiered at JAFF's inaugural edition in 2006 and will be screened in its original 35mm celluloid format. The closing film will be Aco Tenriyagelli's feature directorial debut, "Comedy Buddy," produced by Bion Studios and Spasi Moving Image.
JAFF20 will present a diverse lineup of 227 films from 43 countries, with 11 feature films competing in the main competition for the prestigious Golden and Silver Hanoman Awards. The festival will also feature the Indonesian Screen Awards, showcasing 13 Indonesian films across nine categories, including four new categories added this year.
In addition to the competitive programs, JAFF20 will offer a range of non-competition sections, including the Asian Perspectives program, the Indonesian Film Showcase, and the Panorama program featuring acclaimed works by Asian directors. The festival will also continue its collaborations with long-term partners, such as the Asian Film Academy and Netflix, further strengthening its commitment to fostering the growth of Indonesian and Asian cinema.
