Messina recalled being told by the label, "Oh, if she was 10 pounds lighter, we'd have signed her." She described this as devastating, noting that the criticism still impacts her three decades later. Her sister provided crucial support, encouraging her to persevere.
Messina's career launched in 1996 with her self-titled debut album and continued success with her double-platinum album "I'm Alright." She also bravely disclosed her cancer diagnosis in 2017, announcing remission in 2018 after treatment. Currently, she is touring and preparing to release her first album in 12 years, "Bridges," this summer, with the first single dropping recently.
