Jim Thompson Thriller: Hollywood Explores Thai Silk King's Mystery

Foreign Concept Entertainment is developing "The Ideal Man," a thriller centered on Jim Thompson, the former CIA operative who established Thailand's prominent lifestyle brand before his unexplained disappearance in 1967. The narrative unfolds during the Vietnam War, investigating the suspicious circumstances of Thompson's vanishing at the conflict's zenith and the array of potential culprits. Production is scheduled to begin in Bangkok in mid-2027, with a director currently being finalized. The project is being presented to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market.

The screenplay, penned by Dorothy Kozak Snoke, adapts Joshua Kurlantzick's biography, "The Ideal Man: The Tragedy of Jim Thompson and the American Way of War." Michael Belyea and Snoke are producing. Belyea, an independent producer, has a background with UTA, 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures. Dylan Tarason and Michael Rifkin are executive producers, with Tarason's credits including "Hell or High Water." Living Films, known for FX's "Alien: Earth," will provide on-location production services in Thailand.

The Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company, founded by Thompson in 1951, is collaborating on the film. This brand, which recently marked its 75th anniversary, encompasses textiles, fashion, and hospitality. Thompson's former Bangkok residence remains a major tourist attraction decades after his disappearance. Producers highlight the story's potent blend of passion, intrigue, patriotism, and unsolved crime, noting its enduring mystery and potential for global appeal with A-list talent.
