Gay Virus Comedy 'Jim Queen' Premieres at Cannes

An irreverent French adult animated comedy, 'Jim Queen,' recently premiered in Cannes' Midnight Screenings program. The film's narrative follows Jim Parfait, a popular queer influencer, who contracts a mysterious virus dubbed Heterosis. This unique ailment causes gay men to become heterosexual, leading to a dramatic upheaval in Jim's life, including the loss of his social media following.

Partnering with Lucien, a closeted virgin, Jim embarks on a journey through Paris in search of a cure. This quest aims not only to heal Jim but also to safeguard the broader LGBTQIA+ community. The film is the feature directorial debut for Nicolas Athané and Marco Nguyen, who co-wrote it with Simon Balteaux and Brice Chevillard.

The creators drew heavily from their personal experiences discovering Paris's rich gay culture and diverse communities, including fetish scenes. They aimed to create a "love letter" to these communities, with characters inspired by friends, exes, and acquaintances. Real Parisian venues are featured, emphasizing the creators' commitment to accurately portraying queer diversity.

'Jim Queen' balances humor with serious themes like identity and social media fame. Despite the current global backlash against queer rights, the film maintains a comedic tone, addressing heavy subjects lightly. The project's seven-year development period saw significant shifts in societal attitudes, making the film's political undertones unintentional but impactful. The creators hope its success will encourage more adult animation films.
