28 Nov
Summary
- A musical's crucifixion depiction warning sparked 'woke' controversy.
- The London Palladium warned of imitation blood and violence.
- Similar warnings about the Bible were issued to university students.

A recent trigger warning for an onstage depiction of the crucifixion in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar has drawn sharp criticism and accusations of being overly 'woke'. The London Palladium, where the show will return next year, cautioned audiences about the crucifixion, imitation blood, and some violence.
This controversial warning comes in the wake of similar alerts issued to university students. Students at the University of Sheffield were warned about graphic content in the Bible, including scenes of violence and sexual violence related to the death of Jesus. These warnings, particularly concerning the crucifixion, have been met with disapproval from Christians and historians.
The musical, created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, first premiered in 1972 and follows the last days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas. The original production also faced controversy for its portrayal of Judas and was banned in South Africa.
