Jerry Garcia's legendary custom guitar, nicknamed 'Tiger,' has achieved a staggering $11.56 million at a Christie's auction on March 12, 2026. This instrument, initially commissioned by Garcia from luthier Doug Irwin and first played in 1979, was a centerpiece of the Jim Irsay Collection auction in New York City. The sale occurred 46 years and six months after Garcia purchased it for $5,800.
Bobby Tseitlin, co-founder of Family Guitars, emerged as the new owner. Tseitlin, whose family business is in jewelry wholesale, has a passion for collecting historic instruments and expressed a desire for 'Tiger' to be played and experienced, rather than kept as a static display. He believes the guitar deserves to 'live and breathe' and to be accessible to musicians and fans.
'Tiger' was one of many high-value items from the Irsay Collection. Notably, David Gilmour's "Black Strat" sold for $14.55 million, setting a new record for the most expensive guitar ever sold. While Derek Trucks was seen at the auction and played 'Tiger' recently, he confirmed he was not the buyer, acknowledging the significant cost involved.
Jim Irsay, the late owner of the Indianapolis Colts, had acquired 'Tiger' in 2002 for $850,000 and occasionally loaned it out. His philosophy echoed Tseitlin's, emphasizing the need to preserve instruments that created significant musical legacies for future generations to see and hear.
