Jermaine Dupri initiated an $18 million lawsuit against Sony Music Entertainment on Monday, accusing the company of failing to properly pay royalties for numerous releases. His legal team alleges that Sony's dealings with Dupri's imprint, So-So Def Entertainment, have been unlawful since May 1992.
The lawsuit claims Dupri discovered the alleged underreporting of royalties in 2023. His attorneys detailed a consistent pattern of misreporting and retroactive statement updates impacting various So-So Def production and royalty accounts.
Sony has declined to comment on the allegations. The suit highlights unpaid producer royalties for Xscape's "Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha" and Da Brat's "Funkdafied," alongside understated royalties for albums by Mariah Carey and Usher, among others.
Dupri is seeking a minimum of $18 million, plus interest and attorney fees, as determined by a jury trial.
