Hudson's Turn: Producing Dreamgirls, New Album

Nearly two decades after her iconic portrayal of Effie White in "Dreamgirls," Jennifer Hudson is returning to the production in a new capacity as a producer for its Broadway revival. This reimagined version is directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown. Hudson has been actively involved, sitting in on auditions to find the next Effie, a role she famously secured after reportedly beating out approximately 800 hopefuls for the 2006 film.

The "Dreamgirls" movie was Hudson's cinematic debut, coming two years after her notable "American Idol" elimination. Her performance earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at 25, making her the youngest Black winner in that category at the time. She has since achieved an EGOT and starred as Aretha Franklin in "Respect."

This new venture signifies a personal shift for Hudson, who described it as "my turn" to put herself first. Inspired by her son, David Otunga Jr., and her partner, Common, she is developing an untitled album that will prioritize her own experiences and voice. Hudson intends to use her platform to share her stories and speak her truth, following advice from music legends like Aretha Franklin and Carole King.
