Jason Statham is producing and starring in the highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 hit "Layer Cake," titled "Viva La Madness." The British actor steps into the role of a drug kingpin, a part originally played by Daniel Craig. This new action thriller sees Statham reuniting with his frequent collaborators, director Guy Ritchie and actor Vinnie Jones.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by JJ Connolly, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ritchie. "Viva La Madness" centers on a cocaine dealer whose retirement plans are disrupted when he's compelled to undertake one final job.
Filming for the movie commenced recently in London's Russell Square. Statham, who has two children, is joined by Nigerian actor Babs Olusanmokun and American actress Camila Mendes. Olusanmokun is working with Ritchie for the second time, following "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare."
Statham described the project as having "its own element of black comedy but very slick, very sophisticated." This collaboration marks the sixth time Statham has worked with director Guy Ritchie. "Viva La Madness" is expected to capture the stylish blend of gritty realism and dark humor that characterized the original "Layer Cake."
