Japan's Film Frontier Program Unveils Promising Filmmakers for Global Expansion

In November 2025, the Japan Arts Council's Film Frontier initiative has announced the five participants for its second cohort of the Global Networking Program. The selected filmmakers, including directors Kaneko Yurina, Kusano Natsuka, Takahashi Sota, Fujimoto Akio, and producer Yoshihara Hiroyuki, will receive 18 months of tailored support to help them develop their international careers.

The program, which operates under the Japan Creator Support Fund, is designed to nurture creative professionals capable of working globally. It provides guidance for international development, supports participation in overseas film festivals, and facilitates networking with international industry partners. The announcement event, held during the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival, also featured updates from directors Nakanishi Mai and Yamashita Tsubomi, who are part of the program's previous and residency cohorts.

The selected filmmakers expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunities the program offers. Kaneko noted the value of support throughout the entire filmmaking process, particularly in fundraising. Takahashi revealed his long-held desire to make a film in Serbia, calling the selection a "significant step forward." Fujimoto expressed pleasure at receiving support while his film "Lost Land" screens at TIFF. Yoshihara said he was grateful his project was chosen despite being difficult to center, and Kusano emphasized her happiness at dedicating time to research for her next project.
