Japan TV Giants Unite for Latin America Market
18 Sep
Summary
- Ten Japanese broadcasters formed an unprecedented joint delegation.
- The initiative aims to promote Japanese content in Latin America.
- Japan targets JPY3.2 billion in overseas live-action content by 2033.
Ten leading Japanese broadcasters have unified for the first time to form a joint delegation at MipCancun, establishing Japan's inaugural coordinated television market presence outside of Asia. This significant "All-Japan" initiative is spearheaded by the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA), in partnership with Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Broadcast Program Export Association of Japan (BEAJ).
The delegation comprises prominent Tokyo-based stations including TBS Television, Nippon TV, TV Asahi, Fuji Television Network, Inc., and TV Tokyo, alongside Wowow Inc., BS Asahi, Tokai TV, MBS, Inc., and Yomiuri Telecasting Corp. They will operate from a dedicated Japan Pavilion, each equipped with a table for direct engagement with Latin American buyers.
While anime is Japan's internationally recognized export, this delegation will prioritize live-action content, with a specific focus on television dramas. This strategic emphasis aligns with the Japanese government's goal to expand the overseas market for Japanese-origin content from JPY5.8 trillion ($37 billion) in 2023 to JPY20 trillion ($129 billion) by 2033.
A key objective for Japan is to achieve JPY0.5 trillion ($3.2 billion) in overseas live-action content exports by 2033. The initiative seeks to capitalize on Latin America's rich history with serialized dramas, akin to telenovelas, and the region's expanding streaming landscape, which offers new avenues for scripted content distribution.
The "Japan Content Showcase" event on November 18 in Cancun will feature programming from participating broadcasters, highlighting Japanese dramas for industry professionals. A subsequent networking reception will foster further business discussions between Japanese companies and local buyers, distributors, and producers.
