During the 1960s and 70s, actor Janos Prohaska carved out a unique niche in Hollywood by portraying a variety of animals and aliens, rarely, if ever, revealing his face. His most recognized role was the formidable gorilla menacing the castaways on 'Gilligan's Island.'
Prohaska, a Hungarian stuntman, began his on-screen animal impersonations with a role as an ape in "Riverboat." Over the next 15 years, he donned suits to play gorillas, apes, and bears in popular series like "The Munsters" and "Perry Mason." His appearances on "Gilligan's Island" numbered five, though more were planned before its cancellation.
Beyond terrestrial creatures, Prohaska also portrayed various aliens on "Star Trek," contributing to memorable episodes like "The Devil in the Dark," for which he created his own creature. His other notable science fiction roles included appearances on "The Outer Limits" and "Lost in Space," accumulating nearly 40 acting credits.
He was also known for his work on "The Andy Williams Show" as Cookie Bear and for playing a bear, gorilla, and dodo bird on "Bewitched." Despite a heavy Hungarian accent precluding speaking roles, his versatility earned him the Hollywood moniker "The Great Janos."
Tragically, Prohaska's distinguished career, spanning over 15 years, came to an abrupt end. In the 1970s, he and 30 other individuals perished in an airplane crash while working on the production of "The Primal Man."
