Van Der Beek Apologizes for Not Being 'Better Father' Amid Cancer Battle

In a heartfelt social media post, actor James Van Der Beek, 48, celebrated his son Jeremiah's 4th birthday on October 10, 2025. Van Der Beek acknowledged that after two late-term pregnancy losses, he and his wife Kimberly thought they were done having children, but he expressed gratitude that "God knew better."

The Dawson's Creek alum praised Jeremiah's "iron will" and "innate sweetness," describing him as an energetic and passionate child who speaks up for what he wants. However, Van Der Beek also apologized for not being the father he would have liked to be for Jeremiah, admitting there were times when he was "too weak to pick you up, throw you around, or even put you to bed."

Van Der Beek, who announced his stage III colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024, acknowledged the impact his health struggles have had on his family. He said his six children, including Jeremiah, have been "so supportive and so loving and so tender" during this challenging period.
