James Norton, known for his role in "King & Conqueror," will embark on his first major Shakespearean stage role by playing Hamlet in the West End next autumn. The acclaimed German director Thomas Ostermeier will lead the production, which is set to begin next fall.
Norton expressed that taking on the role of the tragic Danish prince is "pretty terrifying" but also a "privilege," particularly under Ostermeier's direction. This marks Ostermeier's first time directing Shakespeare in English, though his celebrated "Hamlet" production has toured globally since 2008.
Norton has prior Shakespearean experience from his student days at Cambridge University, including roles in "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Cymbeline." He also appeared in a short film adaptation of "Richard II" for Shakespeare's Globe in 2016. Ostermeier is recognized for his bold interpretations of classics, having recently directed "The Seagull" with Cate Blanchett and "An Enemy of the People" with Matt Smith in London.
