Inside James McAvoy's Challenging Glasgow Upbringing

Actor James McAvoy spent his formative years in Drumchapel, a district in north-west Glasgow, raised by his maternal grandparents. His parents separated when he was seven years old, and his mother was experiencing chronic ill-health, leading him and his sister, Joy, to live with their grandparents.

McAvoy has described his upbringing as being in a "dicey" area, where his grandparents were strict about his movements due to safety concerns. This led to his freedom being limited until he was around 15 or 16 years old. Despite these restrictions, he expressed appreciation for his upbringing, stating it prevented him from feeling entitled.

Later in his career, McAvoy was reportedly estranged from his father, James Snr., for many years. His father attempted to reconnect after McAvoy's 2006 BAFTA Rising Star Award win. However, the actor expressed little interest in rekindling the relationship, stating he was secure in himself and understood his own development.
