A feature-length documentary titled "Hunt: We Need to Talk About James" has entered production, aiming to explore the complex life of the legendary British Formula 1 driver James Hunt. This film promises to reveal a fuller picture of the rebellious icon, moving beyond his popular caricature. It is being made with the support of the Hunt estate, with F1 champion Damon Hill and motorsport mogul Bernie Ecclestone attached to contribute.
The documentary is scheduled for release in 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of Hunt's dramatic 1976 Formula 1 championship win. Director Benjamin Field, known for his work on "Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted," stated the film aims to achieve for James Hunt what "Senna" did for Ayrton Senna, offering a comprehensive look at a flawed yet driven individual. The production also features a score by BAFTA-nominee Sam Gale.
James Hunt's son, Freddie Hunt, expressed excitement for the world to see both sides of his father, noting that new stories have emerged during filming. This personal project for Field, who grew up inspired by Hunt's commentary, is considered a significant honor. The film seeks to capture the essence of a man who remains one of Britain's most beloved sporting figures.
