Cameron Blasts AI Actors: 'I Wouldn't Do It'

Filmmaker James Cameron has voiced strong opposition to the use of artificial intelligence in replacing human actors, emphasizing that he personally would not employ such technology. Speaking at the seventh Hainan Island International Film Festival, Cameron questioned the desirability of AI-generated performers, highlighting the irreplaceable value of human creativity and unique experiences shared by screenwriters and actors.

While recognizing generative AI's potential to enhance efficiency and workflow within the creative industries, Cameron issued a stern warning about its limitations. He argued that AI, trained on existing data, can only produce average or mediocre results, incapable of generating truly novel or groundbreaking art. He asserted that fundamental creativity remains a human domain, citing "Avatar" as an example of art that AI could replicate but not originate.

Cameron also championed the significance of theatrical releases, particularly in an era dominated by short-form content and streaming. He believes the focused, immersive experience of cinema is crucial for combating shrinking attention spans and preparing audiences for profound emotional engagement with life's experiences. His remarks came as the festival celebrated the China premiere of "Avatar: Fire and Ash."
