Ravindra Manch Decay: Artistes Decry Funding Skew
15 Feb
Summary
- Rs 15 crore allocated for Shilpgram redevelopment in 2026-27 budget.
- Ravindra Manch faces neglect with no funds allocated for renovation.
- Past renovation funds were mismanaged, leading to ignored basic needs.

In the 2026-27 budget, the Rajasthan government has earmarked Rs 15 crore for the redevelopment of Shilpgram at Jawahar Kala Kendra, a move that has disappointed Jaipur's theatre community. Notably, no funds were allocated for the much-needed renovation of Ravindra Manch, a prominent cultural venue.
Artistes have repeatedly called for urgent repairs and upkeep of Ravindra Manch, which has fallen into a poor state despite its past as a premier cultural space hosting renowned artists. Protests were staged last December due to its deteriorating condition.
Senior figures in the theatre community recall Ravindra Manch as a vibrant 'living cultural space.' Concerns have been raised about previous renovation funds, reportedly amounting to Rs 40-50 crore in 2013-14, which were allegedly not utilized effectively for essential repairs, leading to a lack of modern facilities and damaged equipment.
Critics argue that Ravindra Manch requires systematic restoration, citing issues like a lack of a modern sound system, poor cleanliness, and a ruined open-air theatre. There is a prevailing sentiment that the current funding priorities may favor tourism development over the preservation of essential artistic infrastructure.
