The filming of "Jailbroken" presented an intense psychological challenge for star Bryan Larkin, who described the experience as harrowing. Shot entirely within a confined prison cell, Larkin found the environment deeply impactful, leading him to call it "the best anti-prison film." The movie centers on Joe, a violent inmate awaiting release, who receives a call about his kidnapped son and ex-wife. He must race to save them, armed only with a smuggled phone.
Larkin, known for Hollywood productions, returns to his roots for this Scottish independent film. Veteran actor David Hayman also stars as a sadistic prison guard. The characters are intended to represent a gritty reality, with Larkin aiming to reveal the humanity beneath Joe's criminal exterior. He emphasized that even deeply flawed individuals have something they cherish, in Joe's case, saving a son who barely knows him.
Director Vasily Chuprina employed evolving camera lenses to visually convey Joe's mental state. Initially using wide lenses to show Joe's distraction, the camera moved closer with longer lenses as his mental state deteriorated, becoming more child-like. This technique aimed to make the audience feel the character's claustrophobia, as if sharing the prison cell and witnessing his breakdown firsthand.
