A new stage production titled Jagannath-Mangalam celebrated the devotional traditions of Lord Jagannath through a vibrant mix of performing arts. Conceptualized and directed by musician Srijan Chatterjee, the event took place at Rabindra Sadan on July 26, 2024, coinciding with Rath Yatra. The production skillfully integrated Bengal's Pala-Kirtan and Kathakata styles with Padavali Kirtan, various Kirtan forms, dance, and theatrical elements. It delved into the sacred lore of Srikshetra (Puri), Lord Jagannath, his temple, and the extensive history of devotional narratives associated with Jagannath culture.
This immersive presentation featured nearly 30 artists, harmoniously blending melody, rhythm, lyrical verses, acting, and dance to evoke the bhakti-rasa central to Vaishnava traditions. The event commenced with Harinam Sankirtan, followed by an honoring ceremony for Vaishnavas and connoisseurs, setting a deeply devotional tone. The production concluded with the sacred ritual of Mahaprasad distribution, adding a significant spiritual dimension.
Srijan Chatterjee expressed his aim to present Lord Jagannath's story and cultural legacy on a contemporary stage, leveraging Bengal's enduring musical and storytelling heritage. "My fellow artistes and I brought the story of Lord Jagannath to the stage through this new production," Chatterjee remarked, highlighting the connection to the July Rath Yatra festival. The gathering successfully forged a connection between Bengal's Kirtan traditions and the devotional essence of Lord Jagannath, evident in the strong audience turnout.
