The new series is set at the fictional Hillman College, mirroring the original show's setting. The plot centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Deborah begins her freshman year at her parents' alma mater, striving to forge her own path while honoring their legacy.
The original "A Different World" aired for six seasons from 1987 to 1993, offering a significant portrayal of life at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The sequel series aims to capture that spirit for a new generation, with original producers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood returning alongside Debbie Allen and others.
