A remarkable hoard of Iron Age artifacts, discovered by a local metal detectorist in Cirencester, is set to be displayed at the Corinium Museum. The collection, dating to the 1st Century BC, predates the Roman invasion and offers a significant glimpse into the Dobunni tribe's culture.
The hoard comprises more than 160 coins, many bearing the characteristic three-tailed horse motif of the Dobunni, alongside miniature iron and copper-alloy shields and spearheads. These smaller items were employed as votive offerings, a ritual practice prevalent in Britain from around 150 BC into the early Roman period.
The Corinium Museum has acquired the collection for £13,250 and is now seeking an additional £25,000 for the crucial conservation and public display of these historic objects. Museum officials emphasize the hoard's unique value in illuminating the life, beliefs, and artistry of the Dobunni people during a pivotal transitional era.
