The Irish-language heist thriller "Aontas" has been chosen to represent Ireland in the best international feature film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) made the selection.
Directed by Damian McCann and written by Sarah Gordon and McCann, the film presents a unique narrative told in reverse chronology. It focuses on three amateur thieves, led by a woman experiencing a breakdown, whose attempt to rob a rural Irish bank goes tragically wrong.
The movie stars Carrie Crowley, Bríd Brennan, Eva-Jane Gaffney, Seán T. Ó Meallaigh, Marcus Lamb, and Art Parkinson. "Aontas" was produced by Púca Pictures with support from TG4, BBC Gaeilge, and Northern Ireland Screen's Irish Language Broadcast Fund.
Director Damian McCann expressed his honor and surprise at the selection, noting the film's journey from being shot over 18 rainy days in the Glens of Antrim to this prestigious recognition. IFTA Chief Executive Áine Moriarty praised the film's intriguing twist on the heist genre and its strong female performances.
